Geocache Description:

The Salvation Army came to Cottenham in January 1886 when Alice Copsey and Susan Sindall hired the British School Room (in the old Margett Street School where Cottenham Library now stands).

Cottenham in Focus (2002) says: There was some opposition to the open-air meetings on Todd’s Corner on the junction of Telegraph Street and the High Street, and at the corner of Lambs Lane and the High Street. … an ‘Anti-Salvation Army Tea’ was organise at the Hopbind. Constable Vialls, the village policeman, suggested the lasses go back to Cambridge for their own safety.

A ‘Flying Squad of Hallelujah Lasses’ was sent from Cambridge later in the year …. Land at the front of the ‘Old Barn was purchased for a hall, which was opened on 17th July 1937. The building continues in use to this day, and the Barn at the rear hosts church and community events
