La grotta di San Michele è situata ai piedi di Minervino Murge, in una vallata che si trova al termine di quel canale naturale, un tempo fiumiciattolo, denominato "Matitani".
La grotta di San Michele è una cavita carsica la cui formazione risale al Quaternario (2 milioni d'anni fa), periodo in cui quest'area, sino ad allora sommersa, comincia ad innalzarsi sul livello del mare.
Le prime testimonianze scritte, riferentesi a questa grotta, sono reperibili in una pergamena conservata nell'Abbazia di Montecassino, e datata 12 febbraio dell'anno 1000. La grotta doveva, però, essere conosciuta e frequentata già in passato e presumibilmente in età paleocristiana.
La grotta viene dedicata all’Arcangelo presumibilmente verso la metà del 1600, quando cioè S. Michele diviene patrono di Minervino Murge.
Pittoresche le celebrazioni in onore di San Michele, il 29 settembre, festa patronale, e l’8 maggio, con la cerimonia nella chiesa rupestre.
Il sito ha un interesse Storico, Artistico, Speleologico e Religioso e racchiude in sé NATURA, ARTE e FEDE. A tutto fa da sfondo un bellissimo scenario collinare.

The cave of San Michele is located at the foot of Minervino Murge, in a valley that is at the end of that natural canal, once a stream, called "Matitani".
The cave of San Michele is a karst cavity whose formation dates back to the Quaternary (2 million years ago), a period in which this area, until then submerged, began to rise above sea level.
The first written testimonies, referring to this cave, can be found in a parchment preserved in the Abbey of Montecassino, and dated February 12, 1000. The cave must, however, have been known and frequented already in the past and presumably in the early Christian era.
The cave was dedicated to the Archangel presumably towards the middle of 1600, when St. Michael became the patron saint of Minervino Murge.
Picturesque are the celebrations in honor of San Michele, on September 29, the patronal feast, and on May 8, with the ceremony in the rock church.
The site has a historical, artistic, speleological and religious interest and contains NATURE, ART and FAITH. A beautiful hilly landscape provides the backdrop to everything.
