We are inviting you to visit the Bypass Road across Vršič pass. Since the road we nowdays use to cross Vršič pass is called the Ruska cesta, the bypass road could also be called the Russian Bypass Road. It would not be wrong even to call it the New Russian Road, since it was built later than the current ‘Ruska cesta’. Both roads were built during the First World War to supply the front line in the Soča valley. But why two roads to cross one pass? The direction of the old forestry route has been used for the original route, along which today's ‘Ruska cesta’ runs - across the lowest point of the pass. In the spring of 1916, at the end of the first winter after the opening of the road, a large avalanche made its use impossible. Since the road and the freight cable car were vital for supplying the army, military authorities immediately decided to build a bypass road and also a bypass cable car. The route of the new road largely avoided the danger of avalanches and could therefore be used all year round. It ran separated from the ‘Russian road’ between the 16th and 27th hairpin bends of the Russian road (if we use today's numbering). The original route has a total of 50 hairpin bends form Kranjska Gora to Trenta. The bypass road had a total of 69!

The original route of the road, which is still in use today, had a maximum gradient of 10.8% and an average of 7.25% from Kranjska Gora to the pass when it was built. The slope of the road was strictly limited so that horse-drawn carts pulling cannons and other heavy loads could overcome the steepness. The road with a small gradient could only be made over the steep slope with the help of hairpin bends.
The one on which the geocache is hidden is the first on the Bypass Road. If we added the ones below it, on the lower part of the Russian road, it would be the seventeenth.
