Sediments on the Beach
Questions and tasks
- What types of sediment can you see here on the beach? What are the grain sizes of the different types present here?
- On site you find also an unusual gray sediment with smaller grain sizes than sand. What is the surface like? How does it feel? Can you rub it between your fingers? What type of sediment would you classify it as? In your opinion, is it a sediment or sedimentary rock?
- Please take a photo of yourself or a personal item at the listed coordinates and attach it to your log.
Sediments and sedimentary rocks
Sediments in the geoscientific sense are various mineral and/or organic loose materials that are deposited on dry land or at the bottom of a body of water after a short or long transport by gravity or a flowing medium. Sedimentary rocks are more or less solid rocks that have emerged from such sediments through solidification over geological time periods.

The fine sediments can be determined with a finger test:
- Sand feels grainy, rough and scratchy. It does not stick in the grooves of your fingers.
- Silt feels velvety and floury and is hardly cohesive. If you smear silt, the smear surface does not shine. Silt sticks strongly in the grooves of your fingers.
- Clay feels sticky and is very cohesive. This makes it easy to shape. If you smear clay, it creates a shiny smear surface.

Tortul kayaçlar, jeolojik zaman dilimleri boyunca katılaşma yoluyla bu tür tortulardan ortaya çıkan az çok katı kayaçlardır.

İnce tortular parmak testi ile tespit edilebilir:
- Kum taneli, pürüzlü ve çizik gibi hissedilir. Parmaklarınızın oluklarına yapışmaz.
- Silt kadifemsi ve unlu bir his verir ve neredeyse hiç yapışkan değildir. Alüvyon sürerseniz, bulaşma yüzeyi parlamaz. Alüvyon parmaklarınızın oluklarına güçlü bir şekilde yapışır.
- Kil yapışkan hissedilir ve çok yapışkandır. Bu, şekillendirmeyi kolaylaştırır. Kili sürerseniz, parlak bir bulaşma yüzeyi oluşturur.

Fragen und Aufgaben
- Welche Sedimentarten kannst du hier am Strand erkennen? Welche Korngrößen haben die unterschiedlichen hier vorhandenen Ablagerungen?
- Vor Ort findest du auch ein ungewöhnliches graues Sediment mit geringeren Korngrößen als Sand. Wie ist die Oberfläche beschaffen? Wie fühlt es sich an? Kannst du es zwischen den Fingern zerreiben? Welcher Sedimentart würdest du es zuordnen? Handelt es sich deiner Meinung nach um ein Sediment oder Sedimentgestein?
- Macht bitte vor Ort ein Foto von euch oder einem persönlichen Gegenstand und ladet es mit eurem Log hoch.
Sedimente und Sedimentgesteine
Sedimente im geowissenschaftlichen Sinn sind verschiedene mineralische und/oder organische Lockermaterialien, die nach einem kürzeren oder längeren Transport durch Schwerkraft oder ein strömendes Medium auf dem trockenen Land oder am Grund eines Gewässers abgelagert werden. Sedimentgesteine sind mehr oder weniger feste Gesteine, die im Laufe geologischer Zeiträume aus solchen Sedimenten durch Verfestigung hervorgegangen sind.

Mit einer Fingerprobe lassen sich die feinen Sedimente unterschieden:
- Sand fühlt sich körnig, rau und kratzend an. Er haftet nicht in den Fingerrillen.
- Schluff fühlt sich samtig-mehlig an und ist kaum bindig. Wenn man Schluff verschmiert, glänzt die Schmierfläche nicht. Schluff haftet stark in den Fingerrillen.
- Ton fühlt sich klebrig an und ist stark bindig. Deswegen ist er gut formbar. Wenn man Ton verschmiert, ergibt es eine glänzende Schmierfläche.
