The learning objective with this earthcache is to be able to identify traces of iron oxide. At the location you can find bedrock with a high iron content and oxidation in the form of Fe₂O₃.

Iron (III) oxide or red rust has the chemical formula Fe₂O₃ and is one of several iron oxides. It occurs naturally in several different minerals, above all hematite, ferrihydrite and maghemite.
Iron is placed in the periodic table with the chemical designation Fe, and has atomic number 26 in the table. This is a metallic element and is the most abundant metal on earth. The main content of the earth's iron stock is still not found on the surface, but in the mantle of the earth's interior. Iron is not typically found in nature in its pure form either, but the metal is most commonly extracted from iron ore, and then typically as pyrite (FeS2) and magnetite (FeS).
The chemical reaction that occurs between iron and oxygen is called iron oxide, and has the designation Fe2O3. It appears with its characteristic color in nature and on bedrock with its brown-orange color play. The discoloration is what we typically refer to as rust color. Iron oxide does not emit an odor, but can emit color if you run your hand over it or come into contact with clothes and shoes. Here at this location we have iron oxide which has colored the rock and mountain with its rust color which has washed down with the water. This is because iron oxide is formed as an oxidation of iron, and the iron oxide is then dissolved in the water and transported with the waterway and remains as the water evaporates.
In other words, and simply summarized, we can find traces of iron in rocks around the world. And especially in areas with volcanic mass such as metamorphic rocks, deep rocks and that the conditions are favorable with plenty of air and water.
