The Yuzawa Weir is about 4.5 km long, and the average width of the waterway is about 4.5 m, running through the city from south to north. The characteristic is that both the water inlet and the end point flow down at an altitude of around 95m with a small difference in height, and there are even inverted slopes in the middle. There is a general principle that water flows lower than high, but if water flows into the gutter from upstream, it is a design that makes good use of the fact that it is pushed up to a certain high place and flows. When selecting this route, it is a major feature of this artificial waterway, such as making good use of the shoulders of the natural taces, facilitating the diversion of water to the rice fields in the west, and also planning to reduce construction costs.

湯沢大堰は延長およそ４．５ｋｍ、水路の幅員平均約４．５ｍ、市内を南から北へ貫流している。特徴は、取水口も終点も標高９５ｍ前後を、僅少な高低差で流下し、その途中には逆勾配の個所さえある。水は高きより低きに流れるという大原則はあるが、樋に上流から水を流入した場合、ある程度高いところへ押し揚げられて流れるということを、うまく利用した設計である。この路線を選定するにあたり、自然の段丘の肩をうまく利用し、西側の田圃への分水流下を容易にし、加えて工事費の低減を計ったことなどは、この人工水路の大きな特徴である。
