Geocache Description:

This is quite literally just a cache.

This is not meant to be the most spectacular cache in the world, it's simply one to get your numbers (and smileys) up!

I want to get more caches out in our area, and hope to move onto placing cooler and more interesting caches soon.

This cache can be done as a quick Cache and dash, or combined with a very pleasant walk along the new(ish) path!

About the path

Along the path you will pass plenty of points of interest, including the site of the old Grovesend Station on the Pontarddulais to Swansea line which opened in 1866 and was run by the London and North Western Railway from 1873. In 1910 the LNWR ran 14 passenger trains along this route. Grovesend Station closed in 1932 and passenger trains ended with the closure of the line in 1964.

You'll also see the site of the former Brynlliw Colliery which also used the railway line. It was first sunk between 1903 and 1908, closed in 1927, before being re-opened in 1954 after a £4.8m redevelopment. In 1968 its output annually was more than 300,000 tonnes, but it finally closed again in 1982.

More fascinating still is a patch of land now only occupied by sheep but that in the build-up to the D-Day landings during the Second World War was home to 3,000 American troops. Many would eventually sail to Normandy from Swansea Docks, but before then they forged links with the locals, some even marrying local girls who then went off to live in the States.
