It’s that time of year again when the HOGs host their annual kayak outing! This will mark their third wallow on the water and hopefully will be the best one yet.
This year, the yak wallow is a Community Celebration Event, so you can cross that off your bucket list! They will be paddling (or getting paddled, who are they to judge!) on Acton Lake at Hueston Woods State Park. A ways from the usual sty, so why in the world did they go down there!?
This year the HOGs will be tackling the Geo-Cents Geoart by cache_n_out! A little different than other lake caches, this entire series is T4.5 versus T5, AND has all nine difficulties! That’s new artwork on your map AND the more elusive terrain rating will get bumped AND you will have satisfied any “all difficulties in a day” challenges out there! Those who get sea sick can hit the hiking trails, picking up many Letterboxes and others. And that’s if you stay local! There are so many other caching opportunities so close; even if you have completed or do not do water, this is a fabulous opportunity to spend a weekend with an awesome cache crew.
If you’re getting wet, please keep all ODNR regulations in mind; have that watercraft registered, make sure you have your PFD and whistle. Do not let the terrain rating scare ya away; you'll get your name on the log for sure.
Hueston Woods allows you to spend the night and enjoy an area that contributes to the Heart of Ohio. Multiple overnight facilities are available from primitive sites to RV pads to the Hueston Woods Lodge. ODNR accepts reservations up to six months in advance, and they get pretty full. Some HOGs will be camping on the “A” loop and quite a few on the "B" loop. A marina is also on-site with rentals available through the park.
WOW! A day with the HOGs. Geoart. All difficulties. Sleeping in the woods. A CCE. Can it get any better!? OF COURSE IT CAN!!! These are the HOGs, after all! Pep and Path started stocking give aways on the way home last year, and have been at it since!! Remember that really great signature token they made and gave out last year? Wonder if they will do that again!? Did someone say a campfire (hopefully) Saturday night!? And do you really think Waldo and Wenda would show you their whole hand ahead of time!?
The first year, about 30 folks paddled around with the HOGs; last year it bumped up to well over 50 peeps getting hot and wet wallowing with them. How many will come experience the excitement this year and get melted marshmallow in their hair!? Register your will attend now; this helps the HOGs in planning and keeps you informed as announcements are made leading up to the event. Thanks to Pepperznitro and Pathwayz for hosting such outstanding events, and, personally, for allowing me to be part of this great experience! You guys rock!
UPDATES 08-02-2025:
Folks have said they are not water folks / have done the geoart / dang no pontoon. Do not let that deter you! This event page has a public list of almost 50 fabulous caches on land, no snorkel gear required! They span multiple D/Ts, MANY letterbox and other non-traditionals.
Speaking of public lists, you should also see one for those who I get all wet! I believe the corrected coordinates will not be available to you, so work out these easy puzzles in advance. You probably won't be able to narrow it down by all the yaks snuggling under a low branch....
Finally, remember ALL the other bonuses to this weekend: International Geocaching Day, Community Celebration Event (CCE), two sister events fairly nearby (see announcement below) and camping (possibly) and hanging with about 50 of your closest friends on the water and off, at a HOG event!
