Celebrating 25 years of Geocaching
Wow, Geocaching is celebrating 25 years of adventures, experiences, and amazing fellowship in 2025. Can you believe it's been 25 years?
"On May 1, 2000, at the direction of President Bill Clinton, the U.S government discontinued its use of Selective Availability in order to make GPS more responsive to civil and commercial users worldwide". This made the accuracy of public GPS units go from 100 Meters (330 ft) to about 10 ft. On May 3, one such enthusiast, Dave Ulmer, a computer consultant, wanted to test the accuracy by hiding a navigational target in the woods near Portland Oregon. He called the idea the "Great American GPS Stash Hunt" and posted it in an internet GPS users' group. Within three days, the cache had been found twice, first by Mike Teague.
How did you first learn about geocaching and when?
In 2025, the community will be a huge part of the celebration because geocaching is really all about the geocachers and the connections made. We are hosting this Community Celebration Event in 2025 to help geocachers celebrate 25 years of geocaching while earning a special icon and souvenir. Our event is one of approximately 2,025 unpublished Community Celebration Events released each month to geocachers who qualified to receive one. Bring your geocaching history timeline, your stories of adventures, plus any trackables you'd like to share. We might have a game or two while enjoying fellowship and a meal.
