The Vancouver Island Black Bear Ursus americanus vancouveri (Hall, 1928)
Distribution
Distributed throughout Vancouver Island and some adjacent islands. The highest concentrations are in the uninhabited low-lying forests of the island. Bears do move to higher altitudes but usually only during the summer months. Status: The population is generally stable and is considered to be one of the densest in the world (but see “Threats” below). Estimates range from 7,000 to 12,000 individuals.
Habitat
Forested areas of the island, shoreline when feeding. Usually found in the lower elevations of the island although they will sometimes move to higher levels in the summer. Active during daylight unlike some other black bear populations. This is most likely due to the absence of brown bears on the island.
Description
Slightly larger than mainland black bears with a massive skull and only black colour phase. These bears life span is around 20 years in the wild.
Size
Males weigh up to around 275 kg and females up to around 180 kg.
Diet
Vancouver Island black bears are omnivorous. Their diet includes plant roots and shoots, grasses, berries, nuts, insects, small mammals, crabs, shellfish, eels and, in the autumn (fall) salmon.
Hibernation
The bears enter dens in the winter and a number of these are located in stumps and root boles along western coastal areas close by the shoreline but are also found throughout he wooded areas of the island.
Reproduction and Development
Mother bears give birth in the winter den to litters of betweenWone and four cubs with twins being most common. They
will remain with the mother into9their second year. It is most common0to have two offspring but that number can vary
from one to five. Black Bears4on Vancouver Island usually come out of8hibernation by March and quite visible by April.
Mating usuallyhappens4from early June to mid July. Cubs are born during0hibernation in January or February. During
hibernation the5.mother will nurse these tiny blind hairless babies weighing about1half a kilo (1lb).By the time the
little family leaves5hibernation, the cubs will weigh between three to five kilos. They stay8with the mother the
first year while learning9survival in protection. The mother usually avoids walking through open areas2when moving
her range. The Ncubs usually3spend their first winter with the mother before she kicks them out again8. 7
