Geocache Description:

Summer Solstice Sunrise

On 21st December the Summer Solstice occurs and is the longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. On this day the number of daylight hours is at it's maximum for the year. Today, in Sydney, the sun will rise at 5:40 AM and set at 8:05 PM. That means there will be 14 hours and 25 minutes of daylight. At 12:53 PM the sun will be at it's highest point in the sky, when it will be at an elevation of 80º above the horizon.

So, come along to Wanda Beach, Cronulla to watch the sun rising over the horizon from this great vantage point overlooking the ocean. If it's a clear sky, you should be able to get some great photos, while we take in this once in a year sight. Afterwards, or before the event, you might like to grab a warm cup of coffee from one of the nearby cafes. You might even want to take a dip in the Pacific Ocean if you bring your togs along. Or hang around for the local parkrun which starts at 7:00 AM. We will take a group photo soon after sunrise.

The solstice symbolises change and represents a turning point in the year. The solstice means something to look forward to, as the change of seasons brings on something new! With the Summer Solstice in December, come along and join in celebration.

By attending this event, you will be rewarded with the December Solstice 2024 souvenir.
