This geocache will lead you to imagine stories of the Bergamo area that have now disappeared (or almost) and have left hidden traces. The geocache is part of the Produzioni Ininterrotte series.
Passing by here, you will surely have wondered at least once what this wonderful structure was, and yes, TODAY YOU WILL DISCOVER IT!
The arcade was part of the former Fruit and Vegetable Market: designed by architect Ernesto Pirovano and built between 1913 and 1916, it consisted of five buildings with simple or twin concrete columns where fruit and vegetables were sold daily, a main building that housed the control, goods storage and business management offices, and an internal garden.
Due to changing consumer habits, urban development and competition, the market was decommissioned in 1974 and the building remained unused for years.
An important step in the urban regeneration of Bergamo is the 2022 project to redevelop this area. Restoration work was completed in November 2023 and the former market reopened its doors to citizens, becoming a venue for cultural events and a study room for the adjacent library.
The new hall was named after Mimmo Boninelli: a researcher in ethnography and ethnomusicology, he worked for many years in the Tiraboschi Library setting up the sound library and starting up the Archive of Basic Culture, a fund of oral sources concerning Bergamo's history and traditions collected in 4000 sound documents.
Therefore be ready to lift the veil of mystery that hovers over the history of Bergamo and its province. Happy hunting and may the odds be ever in your favor.
