The Third Man (1949) is a classic film noir set in postwar Vienna, Austria, a city divided by the Allies and rife with corruption. The story follows Holly Martins (played by Joseph Cotten), an American pulp Western writer who arrives in Vienna, penniless and expecting to meet his old friend, Harry Lime (played by Orson Welles). However, upon his arrival, Martins discovers that Lime has mysteriously died in a traffic accident.
As Martins digs deeper into Lime's death, he uncovers evidence of a "third man" who was present at the scene, sparking his suspicion of foul play. His investigation leads him into conflict with Maj. Calloway (played by Trevor Howard), a British officer who’s investigating the case, and also entangles him in a complicated romance with Anna (played by Alida Valli), Harry’s distraught lover.
The film is known for its atmospheric cinematography (shot on location in Vienna), its haunting zither score by Anton Karas, and its iconic dialogue and twists, making it one of the most revered films in cinema history.
