Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Valley of Fire State Park. There is a fee required to access this park.

Day use entrance fee:  $10.00 per vehicle (Non-NV Vehicles: $15.00 per vehicle)
Camping:  $20.00 per vehicle per night (Non-NV Vehicles: $25.00 per vehicle per night) + $10.00 for sites with utility hookups. The fee for biking into the park is  $2.00 per bike.

There is close parking, and a short walk is needed to reach a location with portions of petrified wood. The area is fenced off, but you can still see the petrified wood over the four-foot fence.

Petrified wood is a fossil that forms when minerals replace the cavity left by the original plant. These conditions require an oxygen-deprived environment, essentially devoid of bacteria. This is usually triggered by forests quickly being covered by water and peat moss, preventing decay, or volcanic activity that covers the wood in oxygen-depriving ash, thus preserving it.

Petrified wood holds immense significance due to its unique formation process. Over millions of years, wood transforms into stone through petrification, where minerals replace organic material. This remarkable transformation yields beautiful patterns and colors, offering a glimpse into the Earth's geological history. Each piece of petrified wood is a tangible link to our planet’s distant past, making it a valuable and intriguing specimen for collectors and enthusiasts alike. You get to see a good specimen of petrified wood at this location. The fence was placed to discourage people from taking a souvenir.

One of the distinctive features of petrified wood is its color variations, which result from the presence of different mineral residues. Petrified wood can exhibit various colors, including earthy browns, vibrant reds, subtle yellows, and rich blacks. These colors often create captivating patterns within the wood, adding to its allure.

Identifying petrified wood can be done by examining its color, texture, and weight. It will have a distinctly different appearance from regular wood, with a stone-like appearance and weight.

Patterns and textures in petrified wood provide crucial clues for identification. The original tree's growth rings, resembling those found in contemporary trees, can often be seen in the cross-section of petrified wood. Additionally, the presence of crystalline structures and mineral inclusions can contribute to the unique appearance of petrified wood, making it distinguishable from other fossils or rocks.

Requirements for logging this Earthcache:

1. On the top line, please name the earthcache title and names of all the geocachers in your group.

2. Answer the following questions about what you see in the petrified wood.

A. What is the color of the wood? What helped the wood to be that color?

B. Would you consider the petrified wood to be hard or soft?

C  Do you see any growth rings in the petrified wood?

3. Please add a photo of yourself or something with your geocaching name to verify you visited the site.

Failure to turn in your homework and show a picture will result in a failing grade and the loss of a found log.
