Geocache Description:

Read the story: If you’ve spent any time in Florida, you know it’s gator country. But not every “giant toothy reptile” is an alligator—this statue honors Gomek, a saltwater crocodile once famous for his massive size and calm personality. Gomek was nearly 18 feet long and weighed over 2,000 pounds. For years he amazed visitors with his sheer size and his signature grin. When he passed away in the 1990s, he was remembered as one of the largest captive crocs in the world.

🐊 Alligators vs. Crocodiles

Both crocs and gators live in Florida, though crocodiles are much rarer and usually found in the very southern part of the state. Here are a few quick ways to tell them apart:

  • Snout shape: Gators have broad, U-shaped snouts; crocs have long, V-shaped ones.

  • Color: Gators are darker (almost black), crocs are lighter and gray-green.

  • Teeth: When a croc’s mouth is closed, some teeth stick out. A gator’s don’t.

🧭 Geocaching Safety in Gator Country

Since many caches in Florida are hidden near water, it’s smart to remember:

  • Don’t reach into holes, water, or thick brush without looking.

  • Keep kids close and teach them the “rule of thumb”: if your thumb can cover the animal from where you stand, you’re a safe distance away.

  • Never feed wild alligators or crocodiles—it’s unsafe and against the law.

📸 About This Cache

You’ll find yourself in the parking area near the giant tribute statue of Gomek. His open jaws make a perfect photo stop—so if you’re searching, look casual and pretend you’re just lining up a great picture. Please use stealth; this is a busy spot with lots of muggles passing through.

The cache is hidden in the landscaping nearby. Do not disturb or damage the plants or display. When you find it, please put it back exactly where you found it. Our last container here was lost when it was moved to a tricky, unreachable spot. Help us keep this one in play so others can enjoy the hunt and earn their smiley too.

Good luck… and watch out for that Big Bite! 🐊
