Geocache Description:

Strawberry Rock, a small yet remarkable island in the Komodo region, is famous for its pink coloration. This vibrant hue is caused by iron oxide minerals present within the rock, which undergo a natural weathering process over time. The phenomenon is similar to what creates the red and pink hues seen in other famous geological formations worldwide, such as the Red Rocks of Sedona in Arizona or the Pink Sand Beaches found in various tropical areas.

Geological Processes at Work

The pinkish rock on Strawberry Rock is a form of iron-rich sedimentary rock, such as sandstone. Here’s how the unique color forms:

  • Iron Oxidation: When rocks containing iron-bearing minerals, such as hematite (Fe₂O₃) or limonite, are exposed to moisture and oxygen, a chemical reaction occurs, similar to rust forming on metal. This process, known as oxidation, gives the rock its distinct reddish or pinkish hue.

  • Weathering and Erosion: Over time, natural forces like wind, water, and temperature fluctuations erode the rock, exposing fresh surfaces where the oxidation process continues. This weathering enhances the rock’s pink color and contributes to its textured, weathered appearance.

  • Sedimentary Formation: The rock may have formed millions of years ago through the gradual deposition, compaction, and cementation of mineral-rich sediments. The iron present in these sediments would later react with the environment, resulting in the current coloration.

The island’s unique combination of environmental conditions – including tropical humidity, marine exposure, and geological history – makes Strawberry Rock a fascinating natural landmark that highlights the beauty of Earth’s geological processes.

Tasks for the EarthCache

To log this EarthCache, observe the geological features of Strawberry Rock and answer the following questions:

1. Rock Color

Why is the rock pink? Based on what you’ve learned about oxidation, explain how the presence of iron in the rock leads to its pink coloration. Consider the role of environmental factors like air and moisture.

2. Rock Texture

Describe the texture of the rock. Do you see smooth, rough, or grainy surfaces? Based on your observations, explain how physical weathering (wind, water, or temperature) might have shaped the rock over time.

3. Signs of Weathering

Look for areas of the rock that appear more worn down or weathered compared to others. What might have caused these patterns of erosion? Think about the effects of wind, water, or waves.

4. Rock Exposition

Why do you think the rock is exposed here? Given the processes of erosion and weathering, explain why this iron-rich rock might be visible in this location rather than covered by vegetation or soil.

5. Log Photo

Share a photo of yourself or a personal item proving your visiting date at the Strawberry Rock. You can be creative about how to show the date. Piece of paper, phone screen - anything is fine as long as it shows your date of visit. It has to match the Found-Log date.

Additional Information

Accessibility: The site is accessible via boat as part of guided tours to the Komodo Islands.

Preservation: As part of Komodo National Park, visitors are encouraged to observe without damaging the rock formations. Take only photos, leave only footprints.

Entrance Fee: Park fees of 650.000 IDR may apply when visiting the area.

Fun Fact: Pink and red rocks can be found worldwide, often associated with ancient sedimentary formations or iron-rich soils. Similar processes are responsible for the iconic landscapes of the Grand Canyon and Australia’s Red Centre.

Logging Requirements

To log this EarthCache, please send me the answers to the tasks above via contact form or message center. Remember the log photo! You do not need to wait for confirmation to log your find, but logs without sent answers or attached photo will be deleted.
