From the free car park in the Lower Wireworks head back towards Tintern along Forge Road and take the track on the right sign-posted Penterry Church (2km). This is part of the Pathcare Route No. 4 from Tintern to Penterry (and back). The track climbs behind the cottages and eventually leads into a footpath that climbs up the hill alongside a small stream. This can be very tricky when the weather is wet so solid walking boots and mindful treading is recommended! This is a lovely woodland walk and takes you up towards some remote cottages near Butcher’s Hill. The stream flows down the hill via a series of gullies and waterfalls and in the Spring expect to see (and smell) Wild Garlic and Bluebells. There are lots of interesting mosses and lichens along the route as it is generally very damp for most of the year! Cache is tucked away next to the marked footpath.
