Originally settled by the Hardee Family, and later by the Shackleton's, flooding often ruined crops and destroyed their buildings. Eventually each built further inland (in fact, the Hardee Plantation house still sits near town, on the left side of the road when you leave, moved there several years ago and now falling into decay).
Their dreams here near the river did not meet expectations. The Hardee family still lives in the area, however, and the area near US. 19 is still known as Hardeetown, although only a couple of the old buildings remain.
Please be very careful retrieving the container. You WILL need a tool, patience, and a gentle hand. Pleaase put it back the way you found it (assuming, of course, that the LAST person did). Would you believe that this has been here so long that the tree actually grew up around it?
