The Kinkaid School was begun by Margaret Kinkaid in the dining room of her home on Elgin Street in 1904. After outgrowing both that home and a subsequent school on Richmond Avenue, the Kinkaid School moved to this location in the mid-1950s. The current campus covers more than 64 acres, extending from San Felipe to the banks of Buffalo Bayou.
A unique feature of Kinkaid’s curriculum is their Interim Term program, which offers “enrichment through experience, affording students opportunities to study in areas and situations unavailable during the regular curriculum.” This mystery cache has been placed as an example for students enrolled in Cache Me if You Can, a course which will introduce Kinkaid Upper School students to geocaching and Adventure Labs.
When Mrs. Kinkaid moved her School from her Elgin Street cottage to a new building on Richmond Avenue in the 1920s, the first Alumni Association presented her with a bronze plaque incorrectly commemorating the founding year of the School. Mrs. Kinkaid graciously accepted the plaque, and from then on this year was recognized as the founding of Kinkaid.
