The West Midlands is an urban county with a population of just under 3 million and an area of 902 km2 making it the second most populous county in England after Greater London. This cache is located along the Grand Union Canal in the south-eastern corner of the county, on the Warwickshire border.

The West Midlands is at the centre of Britain's canal network. The canals were built in the 1700s and 1800s and played a key role in the development of the region during the Industrial Revolution, transporting heavy goods like coal and iron. In total, the West Midlands has over 520miles of canals. At 137miles the Grand Union Canal is the longest canal in the UK and the principal navigable waterway between London and the Midlands.
