CAVE DI FANTIANO

Abbiamo pensato di valorizzare questo posto poco conosciuto sul territorio a cui noi siamo molto affezionati donandogli una cache, nella speranza che vi possa regalare qualche emozione  di seguito troverete qualche dettaglio e la storia del posto. 

Partendo dalla città di Grottaglie e procedendo per tre chilometri a nord-ovest è possibile scorgere il meraviglioso Parco delle Cave di Fantiano, antico giacimento minerario che porta ancora impresso il passaggio dell’uomo ed è attualmente oggetto di una grande rivalutazione che lo porterà ad essere un bellissimo parco all’aperto. Questo luogo così particolare è stato a lungo tempo occupato in quanto grande fonte di conci di tufo del territorio, densamente abitato e ritenuto una delle ragioni fondamentali per lo sviluppo del comune di Grottaglie.

Dagli anni ’70, quando terminò l’attività mineraria delle Cave di Fantiano, il panorama si presenta totalmente rinnovato e ad altezza d’uomo. Quel che sembrava un deserto artificiale, poi sfruttato come discarica, si è autonomamente ripreso divenendo un ecosistema rigoglioso e capace di cancellare ogni segno del passaggio dell’uomo. Tra gli oliveti secolari, i boschi di Pino d’Aleppo e la macchia mediterranea è ancora possibile scorgere le numerose grotte artificiali degli antichi insediamenti e le cave tufacee a cielo aperto con pareti a strapiombo, il tutto decorato dai vari monoliti calcarei che s’elevano dal terreno del luogo.

Oggi qui coesistono diverse specie botaniche oggetto d’attenzioni da parte di appassionati e ricercatori, ospitando una vegetazione ricchissima di varietà come gli alberi di pino, mirto, lentisco, alterno, olivastro, caprifoglio, asparago, ginestra, cisto, rosmarino, biancospino. Ma anche il comparto animale presenta una fauna invidiabile, che nel Novecento aveva dapprima abbandonato le Cave di Fantiano, tornandoci solo quando la natura ha ripreso possesso del territorio, inondandolo rigogliosa: barbagianni, beccacce, cardellini, civette, cornacchie, gazze, gufi, merli, upupe e pipistrelli sono solo alcune delle specie che è possibile ammirare effettuando birdwatching sul posto.

FANTIANO QUARRIES
We thought of enhancing this little-known place in the area that we are very fond of by giving it a cache, in the hope that it will give you some excitement below you will find some details and the history of the place. 

Starting from the town of Grottaglie and proceeding three kilometers to the northwest, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the wonderful Parco delle Cave di Fantiano, an ancient mining deposit that still bears the imprint of the passage of man and is currently undergoing a major revaluation that will bring it to be a beautiful outdoor park. This very special place has long been occupied as a great source of tuff ashlars in the area, densely inhabited and considered one of the fundamental reasons for the development of the town of Grottaglie.
Since the 1970s, when the mining activity of the Fantiano Quarries ended, the landscape has been totally renewed and at human height. What looked like an artificial desert, then exploited as a dump, has independently recovered, becoming a lush ecosystem capable of erasing every sign of man's passage. Among the centuries-old olive groves, Aleppo pine forests and Mediterranean scrub, it is still possible to glimpse the numerous man-made caves of the ancient settlements and the open-air tuffaceous quarries with sheer walls, all decorated by the various limestone monoliths that rise from the local soil.

Today here coexist several botanical species that are the object of attention by enthusiasts and researchers, harboring a vegetation rich in variety such as pine, myrtle, lentisk, alder, honeysuckle, honeysuckle, asparagus, broom, cistus, rosemary, and hawthorn trees. But the animal compartment also presents an enviable fauna, which had first abandoned the Fantiano Quarries in the twentieth century, returning only when nature regained possession of the area, flooding it lushly: barn owls, woodcocks, goldfinches, owls, crows, magpies, owls, blackbirds, hoopoes and bats are just some of the species that can be admired by birdwatching on site.
