Un lavatoio del 1931
La storia dei quartieri e dei rioni di Verona passa spesso anche dalla riscoperta di angoli silenziosi, spesso dimenticati, come quelli che ospitano i vecchi lavatoi e a Ponte Crencano è ancora visibile un lavatoio comunale... datato 1931!
Diffusissimi ancora oggi in numerose località della provincia, dal Lago di Garda, lungo tutta la fascia pedemontana, fino alla Lessinia, sebbene inutilizzati, fino alla metà del '900 i lavatoi pubblici erano un punto d’incontro per molte persone e, in particolare, per le donne che lavavano i panni.
Gli strumenti del mestiere" che poteva diventare anche una professione, quella appunto della "lavandara", erano il sapone (spesso fatto in casa utilizzando il grasso del maiale, l'olio e la soda) con la cenere (usata come oggi si usa la candeggina) e la creta (serviva a sgrassare i lavatoi). Il lavatoio porta ancora la data dell'inaugurazione: "1 Aprile 1931, anno IX dell'epoca fascista". La scritta si legge sulla targa in pietra che sovrasta la copertura.
Prima dell'avvento dei mezzi di comunicazione e dei social network, c'erano i lavatoi che erano un punto d'incontro per molte persone, dove tra il vociare della gente si poteva soddisfare la curiosità di conoscere aneddoti e segreti dei signori attraverso i racconti delle domestiche.
Soppiantati dall'arrivo dell'acqua corrente nelle abitazioni e dalle più comode lavatrici che hanno fatto risparmiare alle lavandaie tante fatiche e mal di schiena nello strofinare i panni e geloni alle mani nella stagione invernale, oggi i lavatoi restano testimonianze di un passato da non dimenticare.

A wash house dated 1931
The history of the neighborhoods and districts of Verona often passes through the rediscovery of silent corners, often forgotten, like those that house the old wash houses and in Ponte Crencano a municipal wash house is still visible… dated 1931!
Still widespread today in many places in the province from Lake Garda to Lessinia, although unused, until the mid-1900s public wash houses were a meeting point for many people and, in particular, for women who washed clothes.
The tools of the “trade” that could also become a profession, that of the “lavandara”, were soap (often homemade using pork fat, oil and soda) with ash (used as bleach is used today) and clay (used to degrease the wash houses). The wash house still bears the date of its inauguration: 1 April 1931, year IX of the fascist era. The writing can be read on the stone plaque that overlooks the roof.
Before the advent of the media and social networks, there were wash houses that were a meeting point, where among the chatter of the people you could satisfy your curiosity to know anecdotes and secrets of the lords through the stories of the maids.
Supplanted by the arrival of running water in homes and by the more comfortable washing machines that saved washerwomen a lot of effort and back pain in scrubbing the clothes or chilblains on their hands in the winter season, today the wash houses remain testimonies of a past not to be forgotten.
