Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the published coordinates.

The Chrysler Air Raid Siren, also known as the "Big Red," was a massive civil defense siren developed during the Cold War to alert urban populations of incoming air attacks, particularly nuclear bombings.

Air Raid Siren 1

Manufactured by Chrysler Corporation in the early 1950s, it remains one of the loudest air raid sirens ever built.

Approximately 350 Chrysler Air Raid Sirens (Big Red) were produced and deployed across the United States during the 1950s and early 1960s. These sirens were primarily installed in major urban centers, industrial areas, and strategic locations considered at high risk of Soviet air attacks during the Cold War.

The limited number was due to the high cost of production, installation, and maintenance, combined with their sheer size and weight, which made them challenging to deploy on a wide scale. Many were placed in prominent locations like city rooftops or dedicated towers to maximize their effective range. Some were also installed near military bases and critical infrastructure.

While 350 is a small number compared to other air raid siren systems, the immense power and range of the Chrysler sirens made them a formidable part of the Cold War-era civil defense strategy.
