Portimão inaugura novo 'pulmão verde' no centro da cidade
Um novo espaço verde urbano foi inaugurado no sábado, 14 de dezembro, no centro de Portimão , em frente ao mercado municipal.
O novo espaço verde oferece uma variedade de comodidades, incluindo uma área de ginástica de rua , um pequeno anfiteatro e Wi-Fi gratuito . Além disso, destaca a histórica cantaria manuelina da antiga Quinta do Morais , juntamente com uma nora e um tanque restaurados, que foram integrados ao espaço revitalizado.
O jardim também incorpora vegetação nativa que requer pouca água, em linha com os esforços para reduzir o consumo de água devido à constante luta da região contra a seca.
Prometendo tornar-se uma nova área externa vibrante para a cidade, o Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles recebeu o nome de “um dos mais notáveis arquitetos paisagistas portugueses” e uma “figura emblemática na defesa da sustentabilidade ambiental e do ordenamento do território”.
Este projeto foi inspirado por uma petição de estudantes de filosofia da escola secundária local ESMTG, que foi aprovada pela Assembleia da República em 2023 e levou à instituição do Dia Nacional dos Jardins a 25 de março , data de nascimento de Ribeiro Telles.
Nas recentes comemorações do Dia Municipal de Portimão, 11 de dezembro, o presidente da Câmara de Portimão, Álvaro Bila, falou da importância do novo espaço verde.
“ Este pode ser o único jardim construído no centro de uma cidade algarvia nos últimos 50 anos . O Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles recupera um espaço central da vila, transformando-o num local de lazer e convívio e num motivo de orgulho para todos os portimonenses ”, afirmou Bila.
O prefeito também pediu à comunidade que cuide do jardim, garantindo que ele continue sendo um refúgio acolhedor.
O Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles foi construído em um terreno que abrigava uma favela, onde uma comunidade cigana vivia há mais de 30 anos . Após anos de promessas de realocação da comunidade e revitalização da área, a prefeitura finalmente avançou com a demolição dos barracos improvisados em 2021 , transferindo seus moradores para casas pré-fabricadas no Vale da Arrancada, atrás dos supermercados Continente e Intermarché, na zona norte da cidade.

Portimão unveils new ‘green lung’ in town centre
A new urban green space was unveiled on Saturday, December 14th in the centre of Portimão, across the road from the municipal market.
The new green space features a variety of amenities, including a street workout area, a small amphitheatre, and free Wi-Fi access. Additionally, it showcases the historic Manueline stonework of the old Quinta do Morais, along with a restored water wheel and tank that have been integrated into the revitalised space.
The garden also incorporates native vegetation requiring minimal water, in line with efforts to reduce water consumption given the region’s ongoing drought struggle.
Promising to become a new vibrant outdoor area for the town, Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles is named after “one of the most notable Portuguese landscape architects” and an “emblematic figure in the defence of environmental sustainability and land planning.”
This project was inspired by a petition from philosophy students at local secondary school ESMTG, which was approved by Portuguese Parliament in 2023 and led to the establishment of a National Gardens Day on March 25, the date of Ribeiro Telles’ birth.
At Portimão’s recent Municipal Day celebrations on December 11, Portimão mayor Álvaro Bila spoke of the importance of the new green space.
“This may be the only garden built in the centre of an Algarve city in the last 50 years. The Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles restores a central space in the town, transforming it into a place of leisure and conviviality and into a source of pride for all Portimão residents,” Bila said.
The mayor also called on the community to care for the garden, ensuring it remains a welcoming refuge.
Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles was built on a plot of land which had been home to a ‘shanty town’ where a gypsy community lived for over 30 years. After years of promises to relocate the community and revitalise the area, the council finally moved forward with the demolition of the makeshift shacks in 2021, moving their residents into prefabricated homes in Vale da Arrancada, behind the Continente and Intermarché supermarkets in the northern section of town.
