A 'not so hard to find' cache. The place and the view are what counts. Parking is best at the Mailboxes in the middle of the village, Iggovägen/Gillerhedsvägen. When you are back from caching, you will have wonderful 8 km on your garmin/smartwatch. If you really want to, zou can drive down the Gillerhedsvägen. Have fun!
"Vårdkasar," a historical Swedish system of warning beacons used to alert the population of incoming attacks, particularly along coasts and waterways. These beacons were placed on high points like hills or mountains and organized into three categories:
- Coastal Beacons: Maintained by the king.
- Shoreline Beacons: Managed by local ship captains.
- Village Beacons: Handled by local farmers.
Medieval laws specified the responsibilities for beacon maintenance and penalties for neglect. Unauthorized or unnecessary lighting of a beacon was severely punished as it caused panic and mobilization. The construction of these beacons adhered to specific guidelines.
The sign also mentions two beacons near Hille: one at Eskölklubben, built in 1709, and another on Igön. These beacons played a key role in regional defense, with soldiers typically manning them in shifts. Evidence suggests that beacon systems were in use as early as the Iron Age.
