A Nagyerdei Víztorony története
Debrecen közműves ivóvízellátásának 110 éves története a mai Balmazújvárosi úton kiépített első vízművel, a 60 km hosszú vízvezeték rendszerrel és a hozzá tartozó, 1000 m3 víz tárolására képes és 20 m magas un. kupolás víztorony üzembe helyezésével 1913-ban kezdődött. Ekkor naponta 2000 m3 vizet termeltek a mélyfúrású kutakból és a város lakosságának 1/5-öde jutott ivóvízhez.
1955-ben a második vízmű is működésbe lépett a Nagyerdőn, 1961-ben a város keleti részének vízellátása érdekében újabb vízmű kezdte működését a Vámospércsi úton. A megnövekedett vízigények az akkor közel 50 éve üzemelő nagyerdei víztoronynál sokkal nagyobb mennyiségű víz tárolását igényelték.
Az új és magas betonlábakra helyezett betonmedence (ez valójában a víztorony) feladata lett a vízmennyiség és a közlekedő edények elvének alapján a toronyhoz közeli területen a nagyobb víznyomás biztosítása is.
Az 1960-as évek elején tovább nőtt Debrecen lakosszáma és a lakóházak is egyre magasabbak lettek. A korábbi 5 szintes épületek (pl. Libakert, Erzsébet és majd a Dobozi utcai lakótelep) után az új építési módszerekkel 10 emeletes, vagy annál magasabb társasházakat és lakótelepeket is lehetett építeni. A legfelső szinten is biztosítani kellett a megfelelő vízmennyiséget és – nyomást.
1961-t írtunk, amikor már tervezték az új víztornyot. Az addigi üzemeltetési tapasztalatokat is figyelembe véve a Dobozi lakótelepet jelölték ki az új víztorony helyének és a tervezők olyan víztornyot álmodtak meg, mely már 3000 m3 vizet tárolt több mint 40 m magasan, ami az alapnyomást 4 bar-ral emelte (10 m magas vízoszlop 1 bar nyomást jelent). A csúszózsalus technológiával épített víztorony építése során a kivitelező a statikai számításokat figyelmen kívül hagyva sajnos többször is eltért a tervektől. A 12 db teherbíró pillér az építéskor megcsavarodott, amit sikerült ugyan javítani, de ez időveszteséget okozott. Végül 1963 karácsonyára ( 1963. december 23-án) üzembe állt a 44,5 m magas víztorony, melynek külső és belső medencéi un. tóruszos (azaz fánk alakú) kialakításúak és térfogatuk 1400 m3 ill. 1600 m3.
2018-as adatok alapján három vízműtelep látja el ivóvízzel Debrecent, a vízellátó gerincvezeték hossza 796 km.
További érdekességek a víztoronyról:
- a toronyba csak gyalog lehet feljutni a torony közepében elhelyezett hengerben lévő csigalépcsőn – aki pl. vízmintát vesz, karbantartási munkát végez, minden felszerelést maga visz fel
- a lépcsők száma kb. 196 db.
- a maximálisan tárolt 3000 m3 vízmennyiség 3 millió liter, ami 3 millió db egyenként 1 deciméter élhosszúságú plexi kockában fér el. Ha nagyon vékony plexiből készítenénk ezeket a „vízkockákat”, akkor egymás után rakva 3000 km hosszú lenne. Ezt a kockasort a víztoronytól kezdve eljutnánk pl. Londonig és vissza.
- a teljes víz és medence tömeg (beton és betonvas) 15.000.000 kg, ami 9.375 db négy emberrel teli, vagy közel 10.000 db utas nélküli magyar gyártmányú, japán autót jelent.
- a torony alatt a Bocskai Általános Iskola van és e sorok írója (akárcsak a mai iskolások) a sportpályán a torony felé futva igazi (ma már azt mondjuk: adrenalinos) élményekkel gazdagodott, ráadásul ingyen. A játék neve: fuss a torony felé – olyan, mintha rád dőlne. (természetesen sosem dől le).
- a víztorony hatása a toronytól kb. 3 km-re lévő Tócóskertben is érezhető, mert egy 6 évvel ezelőtti István úti vízcsőtörésnél az akkor tárolt mintegy 1200 m3 vízmennyiség 15 perc alatt elfolyt
- a víztorony ún. töltő-ürítő rendszerű, azaz vagy tölt (kisebb vízfogyasztási időszakban, leginkább az este-hajnal időszakban), vagy ürít, azaz a tárolt vizet a vízszükségletnek megfelelően kell szabályozni
- a víztorony teljes töltöttségét a volt Meteor mozi felé vezető gyalogátkelő mellett lévő csatornafedlapon keresztül szivárgó víz is jelzi akkor is, ha a mérőműszerek nem működnek
- 2018-ban is a három vízműtelep látja el ivóvízzel Debrecent, a vízellátó gerincvezeték hossza 796 km és ennek a rendszernek a kiemelkedő fontosságú eleme a víztorony (vízmennyiség, víznyomás).
- az időszaki kiállítások, a zenés és tematikus programok, valamint a hangulatos kávézó és fröccsbár mellett aktív kikapcsolódásra invitál a víztoronyra épített mászófal. A Víztoronykert színpadán tavasztól őszig a legnépszerűbb hazai zenekarok, zenészek adnak koncertet. Az élményt az esti fényjáték koronázza meg.

History of the Nagyerdei Water Tower
The 110-year history of Debrecen's public drinking water supply began in 1913 with the construction of the first waterworks on today's Balmazújvárosi Road, a 60 km long water pipeline system and the associated 20 m high so-called domed water tower, which can store 1000 m3 of water. At that time, 2,000 m3 of water was produced daily from deep boreholes and 1/5 of the city's population had access to drinking water.
In 1955, the second waterworks started operating in the Nagyerdő, and in 1961, another waterworks started operating on Vámospércsi út to supply water to the eastern part of the city. The increased water demand required the storage of much larger quantities of water than the Nagyerde water tower, which had been in operation for almost 50 years.
The new concrete basin (in fact the water tower) was placed on high concrete pillars and was designed to provide more water and, on the basis of the principle of passerelle, to provide more water pressure in the area near the tower.
In the early 1960s, the population of Debrecen continued to grow and the residential buildings became taller. After the earlier 5-storey buildings (e.g. Libakert, Erzsébet and later the Dobozi Street housing estate), new construction methods allowed the construction of 10-storey or higher apartment blocks and housing estates. The top floor also had to ensure adequate water volume and pressure.
It was 1961, when the new water tower was already being planned. Taking into account the operational experience gained so far, the Dobozi housing estate was chosen as the site for the new water tower and the designers envisaged a water tower that could store 3000 m3 of water at a height of more than 40 m, which increased the basic pressure by 4 bar (a 10 m high water column means a pressure of 1 bar). Unfortunately, during the construction of the water tower, which was built using the sliding-slab technology, the contractor deviated from the plans several times, ignoring the structural calculations. The 12 load-bearing pillars were twisted during construction, which was corrected, but this caused a loss of time. Finally, by Christmas 1963 (23 December 1963), the 44.5 m high water tower was completed, with inner and outer basins in the shape of a torus (doughnut) and a volume of 1400 m3 and 1600 m3 respectively.
According to 2018 data, three waterworks supply Debrecen with drinking water, with a backbone of 796 km.
More interesting facts about the water tower:
- the tower can only be accessed on foot via a spiral staircase in a cylinder in the centre of the tower - anyone taking water samples, carrying out maintenance work, etc., must carry all equipment up themselves
- there are about 196 stairs.
- The maximum volume of water stored is 3000 m3 , 3 million litres, which can be stored in 3 million Plexiglas cubes, each 1 decimetre long. If these "water cubes" were made of very thin plexiglas, they would be 3,000 km long when stacked in a row. This series of cubes could be stretched from the water tower to, say, London and back.
- the total weight of water and pool (concrete and reinforced iron) would be 15,000,000 kg, which is 9,375 Hungarian-made Japanese cars with four passengers, or nearly 10,000 cars without passengers.
- the Bocskai Primary School is under the tower and the writer of these lines (like today's schoolchildren) had a real (nowadays we say adrenaline) experience running on the sports field towards the tower, for free. The name of the game is: run towards the tower - it's like it's falling down on you (it never falls down, of course).
- the effect of the water tower can also be felt in the Tócóskert, about 3 km from the tower, because during a water burst on István út 6 years ago, the 1200 m3 of water stored there was drained away in 15 minutes
- the water tower is a so-called filling-discharging system, i.e. it either fills (during periods of low water consumption, mainly in the evening and early morning) or discharges, i.e. the stored water must be regulated according to the water demand
- the full capacity of the water tower is indicated by water leaking through the sewer cover plate at the pedestrian crossing to the former Meteor cinema, even when the meters are not working
- In 2018, the three waterworks will continue to supply drinking water to Debrecen, with a backbone of 796 km and the water tower being a key element of this system (water volume, water pressure).
- In addition to temporary exhibitions, musical and thematic programmes, a café and a splash bar, the climbing wall on the water tower invites you to actively relax. From spring to autumn, the Water Tower Garden stage hosts concerts by the most popular Hungarian bands and musicians. The experience is crowned by an evening light show.
