In honour of the WW1 soldiers named on the Keyworth Memorial on Nottingham Road - the 3 new housing estates Keyworth Rise, Nicker Hill and Spinners Croft all take their street names from the soldiers who gave thier lives in World War One. These caches are placed in honour of their memories - the fallen soldiers are all local to Keyworth in some way. Many of these families were long established in the small community of Keyworth (787 total population made up of 372 males and 415 female - as in 1911 census summary books).
There are 4 men named Disney listed on the WW1 memorial. These are 3 Brothers and 1 Cousin. Thomas & Mary Disney were the parents of William Disney b.1819 and Thomas Disney b.1831. William & Thomas both had sons called Thomas Disney and both were born in 1852. William's son Thomas married Emma Simpson and were the parents of Arnold, Albert & Claude. Thomas's son Thomas married Agnes Attewell and were the parents of Arthur Disney.
Albert was born in Keyworth in 1889 the son of Thomas & Emma Disney (nee Simpson ). His parents were born in Keyworth and were married in 1872 at Keyworth and went on to have 10 children. His siblings were John, Sarah, Martha, Bertha, Annie, Oliver, Maggie, Arnold and Claude. His Fathers parents were William & Sarah Disney (nee Barlow). His Mothers parents were John & Martha Simpson (nee Pike).
In the census of Keyworth in 1891 the family lived at Rose Hill, Keyworth - Albert (aged 1). In 1901 they had moved to Main Street, Keyworth- Albert (aged 11).
On the 1911 census Albert aged 21 is found at Stanton on the Wolds with William & Elizabeth Bryans Farmer, where he was a farm servant.
By 1913 Albert had married Josephine Smalley and had 2 children Reginald (1913) and Rhoda (1915). Following Alberts death his widow Josephine was awarded a pension of 23 shillings and 11 pence which commenced on 14th May 1917, she never remarried. Their marriage was 25th October 1913 and their first childs birth was 2 days later on 27th October 1913.
Albert Disney Private 25011 was called up in about April 1916 and joined the North Staffordshire Regiment. On the 23rd September 200 soldiers from the 4th North Staffs were transferred to the 1st Battalion East Lancs Regiment and Alberts service number became 29269. His battalion were involved in the battle of the Somme and although Albert survived the first phase but was reported as killed in action on the 22nd October 1916 aged 27. So all 4 sons of Thomas and Emma Disney fought in the war - their son Oliver who had been a prisoner of war, was the only son to return. Medals awarded - The Victory Medal and The British war medal.
Disney Grove is named in his (and his brothers Arnold, Claude and cousin Arthur's) honour at the new housing estate at Keyworth Rise off Bunny Lane.
