Geocache Description:

Thanks go to Budgietas for placing this cache.

This series has been placed to give Geocachers something to find as they travel from one end of the state to the other, find them all in one day or spread them over a number of trips, the choice is yours. While we have made sure to pick these cache locations with parking off the highway, it goes without saying that you will be next to an active highway, please take care and be aware of your surroundings!

This cache can be accessed when heading in either direction. DONT walk across the highway, always park on the same side of the highway as the cache or a u turn bay when available!

In Tasmania, Highway 1 is a 336-kilometre (209 mi) long route that starts at the Brooker Highway in Hobart and heads towards Launceston via a 3.8-kilometre (2.4 mi) long spur. At Launceston it becomes the Bass Highway to Burnie. Highway 1 ends at Burnie. Highway 1 also exists on the mainland of Australia, linking the state capitals via a circular route around the coastline. All roads within the Highway 1 system are allocated a road route numbered 1, M1, A1, or B1, depending on the state route numbering system. In Tasmania the highway is designated as National Highway 1, though all other routes in the state are alphanumeric.

The Hobart to Launceston section is also known as the Heritage Highway, the road was hacked across the state by convict road gangs in the early 19th century to open up the fledgling colony’s interior. Travellers can still see remarkable convict-built bridges, towns of golden-hued sandstone, myriad heritage buildings, and a roadside “silhouette trail” of statues depicting colonial-era scenes on what has grown to become the state’s major thoroughfare. The drive takes about 2hr 30min, but plan for plenty of detours and exploration.

The Bass Highway section stretches from Launceston through to the northwest passing historic agricultural areas with heritage-listed homes. West of Deloraine, berry farms and large-scale dairying attract tourists, while volcanic soils support diverse horticulture. A popular chocolate factory near Latrobe is a key stop. Bass Strait ports at Devonport and Burnie handle daily shipping, with containers moved via Highway 1. The 50km four-lane stretch between Burnie and Devonport supports heavy traffic. Travel time from Launceston to Burnie is 1.5 to 2 hours.
