Geocache Description:

Qinling Panda

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qinling_panda

The Qinling panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis), also known as the brown panda, is a subspecies of the giant panda, discovered in 1959, but not recognized as a subspecies until 2005. Besides the nominate subspecies, it is the first giant panda subspecies to be recognized. Minecraft has added this rarest species to their game.

Distribution

This subspecies is restricted to the Qinling Mountains, at elevations of 1,300–3,000 meters (4,300–9,800 ft). The mountain also works as a barrier between northern and southern China. Qinling pandas are limited to the Shanxi provinces. This is because Qinling Mountain provides the pandas with a terrestrial habitat and semi-arid climate. Both the weather and terrain are perfect for the pandas to thrive and live their lives munching on bamboo. Qinling pandas can live approximately 13 to 15 years in the wild. The Quinling Panda is overall smaller. Its head is smaller and more rounded, yet its teeth are large. Its fur is light and dark brown as compared to the black and white of the Giant Panda. It is found in the Foping, Yang County, Ningshan, Taibai and Cheggu areas of the Qinling Mountains where it is protected with the help of the Changqing and Foping nature reserves.

Habitat

Its coloration is possibly a consequence of inbreeding: as the population is closed off from genetic variation and this might have led to the preservation of the mutation responsible.

Description

It differs from the more familiar nominate subspecies by its smaller skull and dark brown and light brown (rather than black and white) fur, and its smaller overall size. Its eye spots are under the lower lid, instead of around the eyes. Brown pandas are exceedingly rare. Most Qinling pandas are around the same size as a

giant pandas, growing to 1.2–1.8 m (3 ft 11 in – 5 ft 11 in) in length and 70–80 cm (28–31 in) at shoulder height. The males of the species are heavier than females, weighing roughly 60–190 kg (130–420 lb) whereas females are likely to weigh 75–125 kg (165–276 lb). Qinling pandas live 15–20 years in the wild, which is comparable to other giant pandas’ lifespans. Qinling pandas have brown fur whereas giant pandas have black and white fur. In addition, Qinling pandas’ fur could either be dark brown or light brown with white patches. What’s more, giant pandas are known to have black coloration around their eyes. But Qinling pandas have brown coloration that doesn’t fully go around their eyes.It appears like more of the brown patch stays under their eyes. Furthermore, It is believed that the Qniling panda’s color came from some genetic mutation in the giant pandas.

Diet

The reliance on bamboo while having a carnivore digestive system results in energy and nutritional challenges and affects the oral health of these pandas. They feed on bamboo for at least 14 hours a day, which causes their teeth to wear out.[10] The most common dental abnormalities that Qinling Pandas face are dental attrition and fractures. These two abnormalities can impact the survival rate of these pandas.[ The main components of the Qinling panda’s diet are the shoots, leaves, and stems of bamboo. Pandas are considered carnivores, although they have adapted to eat mostly plants, including bamboo. The main food source for Qinling pandas is bamboo, with occasional small Animals, fruits, and other plants added. Despite having developed largely to process bamboo, their digestive mechanism permits them to consume a variety of foods to meet their nutritional needs. The Qinling pandas eat a lot of bamboo every day to suit their nutritional demands; on occasion, they also eat carrion, small animals, or birds. These lush bamboo woods found in these mountains provide the pandas a good place to live. The kinds of bamboo Qinling pandas eat are wood bamboo and arrow bamboo. Pandas have changed their diet to bamboo because it is in excess in their region. The giant panda and Qinling panda will eat meat like reptiles, eggs, small mammals, and birds from time to time. But their main diet consists of the bamboo found in their habitat. Although the brown panda is classified as carnivorous, its diet is primarily herbivorous and they eat bamboo exclusively.

Reproduction and development

The female brown panda delivers the offspring in August, and the gestation period lasts for 95 to 160 days. Pandas mostly give birth to twins, but only one of them normally survives in the wild. The mother brown panda selects the stronger cub and produces enough milk for one cub. A month after birth, the cub fully develops its fur's black and white color pattern. Mothers play with their cubs by rolling with them and they even wrestle playfully. Although cubs can eat small quantities of bamboo after six months, they still feed on their mother's milk. A baby Qinling panda is called a cub. Like giant pandas, Qinling panda cubs also face the highest mortality rate. In the wild, a mother Qinling panda would give birth to two panda cubs, but only one of them would survive.  The cub who is healthier and more active will be able to survive, and the mother will tend to the strongest panda cub as well. If the parents of the panda are both healthy and live a long life, the offspring will also have a long life. Brown pandas are a subspecies of the Giant panda and they share many features. They reach maturity between the ages of four and eight, and their mating season is between March and May. There are no separate names to denote a male and female type of brown Qinling panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis). Usually, a male Giant panda is referred to as a boar, while a female Giant panda is referred to as a sower.
