Geocache Description:

Red Panda

https://outforia.com/types-of-bears/

Red panda, (Ailurus fulgens). Even with DNA testing, the Red Panda is still a bit of an anomaly. Researchers have reclassified them under the superfamily belonging to raccoons and weasels. That has been tentative and is still under discussion. As of yet, they still have their own family, separate from any other animal. The red panda is instead the sole member of the Ailuridae family.

Distribution

They are  found in the mountain forests of the Himalayas and adjacentareas of eastern Asia.

Habitat

The red panda lives high in the mountains among rocks and trees and climbs with agility (though its tail is not prehensile). Red pandas live in high-altitude, temperate forests with bamboo understories in the Himalayas and other high mountains. They range from northern Myanmar (Burma) to the west Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces of China. They are also found in suitable habitat in Nepal, India and Tibet. Ailurus fulgens fulgens lives predominantly in Nepal and can also be found in India and Bhutan. Ailurus fulgens styani (or Ailurus fulgens refulgens) is primarily found in China and Myanmar.

Description

Reddish brown, long-tailed, raccoonlike mammal, about the size of a large domestic cat. The red panda has soft thick fur—rich reddish brown above and black underneath. The face is white, with a stripe of red-brown from each eye to the corners of the mouth, and the bushy tail is faintly ringed. The feet have hairy soles, and the claws are semi-retractile. It seems to do most of its feeding on the ground. It is nocturnal and may live alone, in pairs, or in family groups. Red pandas may live as long as 23 years. They show symptoms of age at around 12 to 14 years old. While females do not breed after age 12, males continue to be reproductively capable.

Size

The head and body length of the red panda is 50–65 cm (20–26 inches) and the tail 30–50 cm (12–20 inches) long, and the weight ranges from 3 to 6.2 kg (6.5 to 14 pounds).

Diet

They subsists mainly on bamboo and other vegetation, fruits, and insects. Bamboo constitutes about 95% of the red panda's diet. Red pandas feed selectively on the most nutritious leaf tips and, when available, tender shoots. Red pandas grasp plant stems using their forepaws and shear selected leaves off with their mouths. Because red pandas are obligate bamboo eaters, they are on a tight energy budget for much of the year. They may also forage for roots, succulent grasses, fruits, insects and grubs, and are known to occasionally kill and eat birds and small mammals.

Hibernation

Reproduction and development

The litters generally contain one or two young that are born in spring after a gestation period of about 130 days. In the Northern Hemisphere, red pandas breed from January through March. In the Southern Hemisphere, breeding season extends from June through August. The rapid change in photoperiod, or day length, after the winter solstice initiates this breeding season. Late spring births also coincide with the emergence of the most tender and digestible bamboo shoots and leaves. Females create a nest in tree holes, hollow stumps, tree roots or bamboo thickets and line the nest with moss, leaves and other soft plant material. Litters typically consist of two cubs born between May and July in the Northern Hemisphere. Red pandas are born completely covered in fur to protect them from the cold environment. Newborns of the species Ailurus fulgens fulgens weigh 3-4 ounces (about 90-110 grams). The offspring stay with the mother for about one year, which is about when they are full-grown.
