Rocheport, established in 1825, is a charming small town with a population of about 200 right on the edge of Boone county, bordering Howard county to the west, in Mid-Missouri. The Katy Trail State Park, a 240 mile long recreational rail trail, that was formerly a part of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, traverses the edge of the town. This trail is also America's longest Rails to Trails project, spanning from Clinton in the west to Machens, near St Louis in the east.
After moving nearby to Columbia in 2023, I discovered Rocheport and have enjoyed visiting, often combining a visit with cycling from home. In November 2024, while cycling past here on a ride from McBaine to Boonville and back, I discovered this interesting location and later thought it would be an ideal spot for a geocache.
This is a regular geocache that is kid friendly with lots of swag and space for trackables too. It is right off the Katy trail and very close to the only tunnel on the trail that was built in 1892-1893. You can park nearby and I have included parking waypoints for two locations, one on Central street and the other at the Rocheport Katy trailhead, from which you can take a lovely stroll down the Katy trail. This geocache is also ideal for cachers cycling/running/walking on the Katy Trail.
There are many points of interest in town and the Diana Bend Conservation area trail and overlook is also nearby, just past the bridge and next to the tunnel. The Rocheport River Walk also runs south of Central street down to the Missouri river. Be sure to check out these (refer to the additional waypoints) and more sites when you visit.
You are looking for a clearly labelled ammo can basically on ground level and it should be easy to locate. Be sure to close the cache properly and return it exactly as you found it.
