In 1929 a family firm of timber merchants, the Becrofts, established on this site what would become the Newport Timber Company. The Becrofts gained a considerable reputation over the following 80 years and their name is well-known in the Newport area.
"The Mill" was completed on this site in June 2018. Its 39 townhouses and apartments now occupy the area of the Timber Mill - bounded by Latrobe, Paine, Crawford Street and Armstrong Reserve.
