Geocache Description:

They say the dead are never truly gone as long as we keep telling their stories—so that’s exactly what we’re here to do!

This event marks the beginning of an exciting new series aimed at celebrating some of the remarkable individuals laid to rest here. Each event will spotlight one of the 125,000 residents and we'll be sharing their life and legacy with you.

York Cemetery - Waking The Dead I
Sunday  26th January 2025

0915 - 0945

What to expect

Our first event will take place in a rarely opened and unique location—the Catacombs beneath the chapel. Please note, access is via a steep set of steps, so it may not be suitable for those with mobility needs. If required, we’d be delighted to hold the talk outside instead. Future events in this series will all take place outdoors.

Take a glimpse into the life of John Johnson (d. 26 May 1881) - a true York eccentric!

Simply mark your attendance and join us on the day. Please gather at the rear of the chapel, please note there will not be a log book or trackable drop off point at this event. Feel free to bring your own refreshments if you’d like to enjoy tea and biscuits during the session.

Important Notes

  • Children are warmly welcome but must be supervised at all times.
  • Dogs are not permitted within the cemetery grounds, except for registered assistance dogs.
  • Please remember that York Cemetery is a working cemetery. We kindly ask all visitors to act respectfully while on site.
