Join a guided walk through St John’s Churchyard and view the remarkable headstones of the early pioneers by torchlight and learn the stories of those buried at this magnificent site, which pre-dates the Canberra we know today by over 70 years! This historic churchyard hosts the graves of many pioneering families and significant Canberrans, and is the oldest single denomination graveyard still in use in the ACT.
I am a long term member of Family History ACT, an organisaton that has provided public tours of this churchyard for many years previous to Covid, and who plan to re-establish them on a regular basis next year. This is a one time opportunity to get a free guided tour with inside information.
This CCE is one of 5 around the ACT this weekend:
Location:
- Meet at the Church Lychgate, 108 Constitution Avenue Reid.
- Parking available near the St John's School House Museum .
There is plenty of parking at the church but you can only turn in from ONE DIRECTION.
Come along Constitution Ave travelling eastwards from Coranderk Street towards ANZAC Parade.
The entrance is signposted and is after the CIT Restaurant and before Anzac Park. Look for the blue street sign.
What to bring:
- It won't be dark but bring a torch to help view the headstones (and maybe scare off any ghosts around).
- Bring a chair to use after the tour - there are no picnic tables and very limited seats around.
- Optional snacks and drinks to share.
- I will supply a table to use, and some snacks and drink.
