Lawn bowls is a precision sport where players roll bowls towards a smaller ball, called the jack, to earn points:
-
Gameplay
Players take turns rolling their bowls down the green towards the jack, which is placed in the center of the rink. The goal is to roll your bowls closer to the jack than your opponent.
-
Scoring
Points are awarded after each end, based on how many bowls are closer to the jack than the opponent's.
-
Bowls
Bowls are large, hard resin balls that are slightly asymmetrical, causing them to curve when rolled.
-
Rinks
The green is divided into parallel playing strips called rinks.
-
Ditch
Bowls that fall into the ditch at the end of the green are dead, unless they make a connection with the jack.
-
Touchers
Bowls that make a connection with the jack are called touchers and remain in play even if they fall into the ditch.
-
Ends
A player or team completes an end when all of their bowls have been played.
-
Matches
Matches are played until one player or team reaches a certain score, or a set number of ends have been played.
Lawn bowls can be played indoors or outdoors on grass or artificial surfaces.
