Geocache Description:

The story below may or may not be true.

Leo the Groundhog of Lake Erie

Nestled near the shores of Lake Erie, in a quiet little patch of woods just beyond a bustling lakeside town, lived a shy and unassuming groundhog named Leo. Unlike his famous cousin Punxsutawney Phil, who reveled in the spotlight every February, Leo preferred the simple life of burrowing, munching on clover, and watching the waves lap against the shore from his hidden perch.

Leo wasn’t the type to seek attention, but he had a unique gift: he could feel the weather in his bones. Long before the clouds gathered, Leo could predict storms, sunny days, and even the occasional strange phenomenon of Lake Erie, like the mysterious ice tsunamis that would form in winter.

Despite his talent, Leo’s predictions were mostly shared with his woodland friends—birds, squirrels, and even the occasional fox. They relied on him to know when to gather food or when to take shelter. “Leo’s always right!” chirped Robin, his feathered friend. But humans never noticed him, too distracted by their apps and forecasts to see the little groundhog.

One brisk January morning, a strange wind swept across the lake, chilling the town to its core. Leo popped his head out of his burrow and sniffed the air. Something felt…off. The air was heavy, the water eerily calm. He knew a terrible blizzard was coming, but no one in the town seemed prepared.

Leo decided it was time to act. That night, he crept close to the town square and found an empty kiosk. Using his sharp claws, he scratched a message into a wooden sign:

"Blizzard coming! Prepare now. Stock food. Stay safe."

When the townsfolk awoke the next morning, they were baffled by the mysterious warning. At first, they laughed it off, but as the hours passed, dark clouds began to form over the lake. The wind picked up, howling through the streets, and snow began to fall in thick, relentless sheets.

Realizing the warning had been true, the townspeople hurried to gather supplies and hunker down in their homes. While the blizzard raged for two days, no one was caught off guard, thanks to the mysterious message.

When the storm finally passed, the town buzzed with curiosity. Who had left the warning? Some believed it was a wandering hermit named Bert, others a Good Samaritan passing through. Only the woodland creatures knew the truth—and they made sure to spread Leo’s tale across the forest.

Though Leo remained unknown to the townsfolk, he didn’t mind. He watched from his burrow as they rebuilt, warmed by the knowledge that his quiet act of courage had made a difference. And from that day on, the animals of the Lake Erie woods gave Leo a new nickname: Leo the Guardian of the Lake.

Though his fame never rivaled that of Punxsutawney Phil, Leo’s legacy as a quiet hero lived on, celebrated in whispers among the trees and carried on the breeze over the shimmering waters of Lake Erie.

Come out an celebrate Groundhog Day. We will have some surprise edible treats to commemorate the day. There will also be some prizes of unspeakable value for those lucky enough to show up. This event will be regardless of the weather. There is a pavilion, however it's an outdoor event so please dress appropriately.

Thanks to Mr. Gerrone, Park Manager
