In the early days of the 19th Century, Mexico was forming as a new country with a centralist goverment and a ban on slavery.  The United States made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase the region of Mexican Texas.  Immigrants from the U.S., mostly illegal continued to settle in Mexican Texas and many brought their slaves with them.  When Mexico began to enforce laws restricting immigration and banning slavery, among other restrictions, the Texians, many who were accostomed to laws under a federalist government, revolted.  In October 1835 Texians engaged the Mexican miliary in the first action of the Texas Revolution.

General Santa Anna assembled a large force and moved into Mexican Texas to quell the rebellion.  The government had declared the illegal immigrants and rebels to be pirates which allowed Santa Anna to proceded with a "no prisoners", immediate execution policy.  Texians had captured the Alamo Mission and expelled the Mexican soldiers garrisoned there.  The Alamo Mission was a previous religious outpost that had been converted to a fort to repell indiginous attacks, but did not have fortifications necessary to withstand artillary assault.

Col. James Neil and Col. James Bowie of the Texian regiments were initially instructed to remove the canons and destroy the Mission to prevent it from returning to the Mexicans.  They were unable to remove the guns due to lack of draft animals, so the decision was made the reinforce the fort and gather additional volunteers. These volunteers included William Travis and Davy Crockett, a senator from Tennessee.

Meanwhile, Santa Anna was making his way with troops through a harsh winter to finally reach the Alamo Mission on Feb. 23, 1836.  The Texians pulled back into the fort or fled while the Mexicans occupied the surrounding town and proceded to set up batteries. Several skirmishes were repulsed by the Texians. The siege lasted until March 6 when the Mexicans received reinforcements and finally overcame the Texian defences.  All of the Texian combatants were killed, even those who tried to surrender or lay wounded.

News of the Texian defeat and Santa Anna's brutality rallied support for the the rebellion as more joined the Texian army under Sam Huston.  "Remember the Alamo" became their battle cry.  In April, the Texians suprised and slaughtered Santa Anna's army.  Santa Anna was taken prisoner.  Eventually Santa Anna was released and driven out of Mexican Texas with the remnants of the Mexican army. Texas was declared an independent replublic
