In late 1875, Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians left the reservations, outraged over continued intrussion by whites into their sacred lands in the Black Hills. They gathered in Montana with the great warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse to fight for their lands. The U.S. sent the 7th Army Calvary under Lt. Col. George Custer to secure their interest in the gold-rich Black Hills territory. Custer arrived on the bluffs overlooking the Little Bighorn River on June 24, 1876. He expected that the large village encamped on the banks would scatter at the first sign of attack.
Custer divided his troops, hoping to cut off escape from various directions. Each of the smaller units met larger than anticipated Indian forces as they did not scatter. In the battle that ensued, Lt. Col Custer and the majority of the troops under his command were killed. This battle was one of the most significant Indian victories in the Indian Wars.
