Geocache Description:

Magnolia Park is a spot where the runoff from the slightly more elevated land above originally came together to form a small creek.

If you’ve already searched for caches in Harrington Park, you may have experienced the annoying phenomenon of being unable to drive easily from (what I’ll call) the “Harrington Park” side of the suburb to the “Harrington Grove” side. Alexandra Cr and Bradley Dr are cut off from Forestgrove Dr despite being “oh-so-close” to all but pedestrian traffic.

That “disjuncture” basically follows the course of this small creek (when it flowed).

The large drainage outlets emptying into Magnolia park suggest that the area is really a sort of uncomfortable hybrid … part park, and part retention area, whose purpose is to slow down runoff and allow its more gradual dissipation over time. (It’s not a true retention area … there are several of these around Gregory Hills, all being walled so a fair volume of water can be retained if necessary, and dissipated over a longer period of time) But the area here may serve to slow down water movement, and enable filtration into the groundwater.

While the surrounds on the slopes above (“the park proper”) are attractively maintained for public use, the flat area below is not set up as playing fields.

The cache is accessed from the lower sweeping pathway which joins one of the Whitten Pde entries with the Bradley Dr entry. (The Whitten Pde entry you need is the less obvious one ... if you use the parking bay provided it is behind you. The path takes you over a somewhat dilapidated footbridge.) To reach GZ you will have to leave the path and step onto the garden, but the nature of the garden permits this to be done without causing damage. The cache is not visible from any angle. You will need to be looking for the short length of wire than can be seen.

Greased lightning! Barely published when found. (A supportive geowife is an excellent asset) Another FTF added to the tally jkcourtz.
