Geocache Description:

I'm thrilled to share my new geocache along Tilt Road in Cobham, Surrey. This area is not only steeped in history but also offers plenty of charm for visitors and locals alike.

Historical Highlights:

  • The Old Fire Station: Originally built in 1833 as Cobham's first purpose-built school, this building later became the village fire station around 1900. Now a private residence, it still features the original bells and firehouse doors, offering a glimpse into the past.
  • The Tilt Conservation Area: Designated in 1979, this conservation area stretches along Tilt Road and into the picturesque commons. It’s a tranquil spot, steeped in Cobham’s history.
  • World War II Connections: During the 1930s, Tilt Road was notoriously muddy until Canadian troops improved it during World War II. Cricket matches were once played on The Tilt until the 1920s, with nearby cottages protected by chicken wire from stray balls.

Geocache Details:

  • This is a high-muggle area, so please be sneaky when retrieving and replacing the cache to keep it hidden from passersby.
  • The cache contains a logbook but no pen, so please bring your own writing implement.

Happy hunting, and enjoy exploring the history and nature on the Tilt.
