Geocache Description:

SLO:

Stropi so kamniti obokani in leseni.

ENG:

Between Škofja Loka, Kranj and Medvode, between the Sora, Sava and the Železica, there is the Sorško polje, full of tiny corners that we do not notice, or we pass by them.

Hidden in the village Praše is Jurjova kašča (Jurjo's granary), which was declared as cultural monument of local importance on 22. 6. 2022. A signpost by the road directs us to it.

The granary has a long history, presumably from the 13th century on. From the 13th to the 18th century, there were 13 hubs in Praše ("huba" is a feudal estate, large enough for one family to survive on it. Its size depended of land, suitable for cultivation in the area, and was also a unit for taxation), which were approximately 14 hectares in size.

It is assumed that Jurjova kašča was a place where were collected taxes for the Freising bishops. The taxes were partly in money, partly in the form of crops: barley, wheat, rye and millet.
The Freising bishops had their land taken away in 1803, when church estates in Austria were nationalized, and in 1848 the land emancipation followed. Farmers could buy back their land or farm in twenty annual installments.

Jurjova kašča is an artistically and symbolically important building in Praše and the surrounding area, and at the same time the only granary of its kind in the wider Kranj area.

It was designed at the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century, at the end of the 18th century it was enlarged and Baroque-styled, at the end of the 19th century the current floor was built and in the middle of the 20th century the roof was replaced and modified.

The granary is a basement storage and living space on two floors. The building has a basement and ground floor built of stone, the upper floor is made of brick. The stonework details (portals, window frames) are made of Škofja Loka conglomerate and tuff. The ceilings are stone vaulted and wooden. The granary was used to collect tithes for the Škofja Loka lordship, and later it was also used to store gifts for the Škofja Loka Capuchins.

The granary also had residents in the past. In addition to the ancestors of the current owner, a Loka Capuchin friar lived here from time to time. He came to celebrate mass twice a year in the church of St. Magdalene in Praše.

The cache is placed with the permission and cooperation of the land owner.
