Ezzel a rejtéssel szeretnélek meghívni benneteket egy ma már nem létező épület múltjának felfedezésére.
Debrecen egykori legnagyobb zsinagógája 1897 szeptemberében épült meg Jacob Gärtner terveinek eredményeként. Az impozáns imaház 1962-ig állt a régi Deák Ferenc utcában.
A ,,status quo ante" zsidóság 1892-ben határozta el a nagyváros rangjához méltó templom tervezését és felépítését. Ennek érdekében megvásárolták a Nagy Várad utca 2204 és 2205 számú (később Deák Ferenc utca 8. szám alatti) Molnár-féle telket.
A keleties hatású épületet Jacob Gärtner tervezte. A 600 földszinti és 250–250 karzati ülőhelyes templomot a debreceni mester, Schneider István építhette meg. A 40 méter hosszú és 23 méter széles, téglalap alakú épület sarkaiban lépcsőházak voltak, s a főhomlokzat felőliekre hagymakupolás tornyokat is emeltek. Ez volt a cívisvárosban az egyetlen háromtornyos gyülekezeti hely.
A külső homlokzat iszlám hatású megjelenését az egymást váltó négy sor sárga, valamint 10 sor vörös csíkokba rendezett nyerstégla-burkolat is fokozta.
A 13 méter átmérőjű kupoladobon két méter sugarú hagymakupola tündökölt, s a csillagot e fölé szerelték, amivel a templom 44 méter magas lett.
A környék ezáltal igazán lenyűgöző volt, hiszen onnan karnyújtásnyira ragyogott a Nagyállomás, és ott épült meg a Royal Szálló, valamint a kamarai és a törvényszéki palota is.
A kétnapos avató ünnepség 1897. szeptember 7-én kezdődött. Aztán az 1944-es bombázások és a harcok a zsinagógában is kárt tettek, de nem végzeteseket. Viszont a helyreállítás során, emberi mulasztás miatt a tetőzet meggyulladt, és elpusztult.
Az életveszélyes szerkezeti részek elbontását 1948 októberében kezdték el. 1962-ig nagy kupola nélkül és hasznosítatlanul állt a zsinagóga az akkor már Petőfi tér nevű városrészben.
Végül a hatóság kiadta a bontási engedélyt – ,,városrendezési okokból”.
A rejtés erdőrészben fa tövénél avarral takarva található.

With this hide, I would like to invite you to discover the past of a building that no longer exists.
The former largest synagogue in Debrecen was built in September 1897, designed by Jacob Gärtner. The imposing prayer house stood on the old Deák Ferenc Street until 1962.
In 1892, the "status quo ante" Jews decided to design and build a temple worthy of the city's status. To this end, they purchased the Molnár plot at 2204 and 2205 Nagy Várad Street (later 8 Deák Ferenc Street).
The building, with its oriental influence, was designed by Jacob Gärtner. The church, with 600 seats on the ground floor and 250-250 seats in the choir loft, was built by the master builder István Schneider from Debrecen. The 40 m long and 23 m wide rectangular building had staircases in the corners and onion-domed towers on the main façade. It was the only three-towered church in the city.
The Islamic-influenced appearance of the exterior façade was enhanced by the alternating four rows of yellow and 10 rows of red stripes of ashlar cladding.
The dome, 13 metres in diameter, was surmounted by a two-metre radius onion dome, and the star was mounted above it, making the church 44 metres high.
The surrounding area was truly stunning, with the Grand Station, the Royal Hotel and the Chambers and Law Courts Palaces all within arm's reach.
The two-day inauguration ceremony began on 7 September 1897. Then the bombing and fighting of 1944 did damage to the synagogue, but not catastrophic. However, during restoration, due to human error, the roof caught fire and was destroyed.
The demolition of the life-threatening structural parts began in October 1948. Until 1962, the synagogue stood without a large dome and unused in what was then Petőfi Square.
Finally the authorities issued a demolition permit - "for urban planning reasons".
The hiding place is located in a wooded area at the base of a tree, covered with undergrowth.
