The Earth Science Lesson
金沢城の石垣には、「戸室石」と呼ばれる石材が使われています。戸室石は、石川県で採取される「安山岩」です。ここでは、安山岩について学びます。
戸室石とは
戸室石は、岩石学上は「安山岩」に分類されます。
安山岩は溶岩が冷えてできる「火成岩」であり、その中でも地表付近で急速に冷却された「火山岩」です。安山岩は中程度の粘性を持った溶岩から形成されます。
酸化作用により、赤色または青色を呈していることが特徴の一つです。
戸室石の産地
戸室石は、金沢城の東にある戸室山で産出します。40万年前に形成されたと考えられています。地質図を見ても、そこに安山岩の地層があることが分かります。

The stone walls of Kanazawa Castle use a type of stone called "Tomuro Stone." Tomuro Stone is an "andesite" mined in Ishikawa Prefecture. In this lesson, we will learn about andesite.
What is Tomuro Stone?
Tomuro Stone is classified as "andesite" in the field of petrology.
Andesite is an "igneous rock" formed by the cooling of lava, specifically a "volcanic rock" that cools rapidly near the Earth's surface. Andesite is formed from lava with moderate viscosity.
One characteristic of andesite is its red or blue color, caused by oxidation.
Origin of Tomuro Stone
Tomuro Stone is sourced from Mount Tomuro, located east of Kanazawa Castle. It is believed to have been formed 400,000 years ago. A geological map also shows an andesite layer in this area.
