Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!
Flatwoods Monster
The Flatwoods Monster, also called the Braxton County Monster, emerged in 1952 when witnesses in Flatwoods, West Virginia, reported encountering a tall, metallic, humanoid figure after seeing a strange fireball in the sky. It was described as 10–12 feet tall, with a spade-shaped head, glowing red eyes, and claw-like hands. Many speculate the creature was an alien linked to a UFO crash. Skeptics attribute the sightings to natural phenomena and misidentified owls, but the legend remains an iconic piece of UFO folklore. Flatwoods embraces the story with a museum and themed events.
