Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!
Albatwitch
The Albatwitch is a mischievous cryptid tied to Pennsylvania folklore, particularly around Chickies Rock in Lancaster County. This diminutive creature, standing 3–4 feet tall, is often compared to a small version of Bigfoot. Covered in reddish-brown hair, the Albatwitch is known for its playful antics, including its signature habit of stealing apples and pelting the cores at unsuspecting passersby, in fact its name is thought to derive from "apple-snitch." Early settlers believed the Albatwitch lived in the dense forests surrounding the Susquehanna River, often heard but rarely seen. Though sightings have become infrequent, the legend is celebrated annually at Albatwitch Day in Columbia, Pennsylvania, where locals and visitors honor this quirky piece of regional folklore.
