Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!

Tailypo

Tailypo is a ghostly and vengeful creature from Appalachian folklore, deeply rooted in oral storytelling traditions. It is described as a small, cat-like beast with a sleek, dark body, glowing eyes, and a long, whip-like tail. According to the legend, Tailypo seeks revenge after being maimed or killed by a hunter, haunting its victim while uttering the chilling refrain, “Tailypo, give me my tail!” The tale often begins with a hermit or woodsman who cuts off the creature's tail for food, only to face its wrath when it returns to reclaim it. The story, passed down through generations, serves as a cautionary tale about respecting nature and avoiding greed. Tailypo is said to inhabit the remote forests of the Appalachians, where its eerie presence adds an extra layer of fear to the wilderness.

Aw man, I zoomed in too far on this one. I should've studied the rule of thirds better in my cinematography class...
