Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!
Veggieman
Veggieman, or the Vegetable Man, is one of West Virginia’s strangest cryptids. First reported in the 1960s, Veggieman is described as a tall, thin humanoid with green, vine-like skin, long fingers, and yellow eyes. Witnesses claim it communicated telepathically, often pleading for help in an eerie, melodic voice. Veggieman allegedly drained energy from humans through physical contact, describing its actions as necessary for survival. Many theorists link Veggieman to extraterrestrial origins, citing its otherworldly appearance and abilities. While the legend is less well-known than others in West Virginia folklore, it has gained a cult following among cryptid enthusiasts, adding a touch of the bizarre to the region's rich mythos.
