Welcome to the last tramline, or topmost, of the old tramway which served Howth Head. The termini were at Sutton railway station, by the entrance to the peninsula, and Howth railway station by the village and harbour of Howth. The tramway operated from 17th June 1901 to 31st May 1959 and was run by the Great Northern Railway (Ireland). This tramway replaced a horse bus service, which had run since 1867. Nowadays, the tramways are incorporated into 4 out of the 5 Howth walking loops (see photos of all five, 1-4 will include tramways at some points).
Being the topmost tramline and the closest to potential ice cream sources, this is our mini cachers favourite! You'll only be a short stroll upwards to the summit car park where the most magnificent views will be awaiting you of Dublin Bay, the Baily Lighthouse, the pidgeon houses and across to the southside! You're treemendous for having a go at our tramway trail ;)
