Geocache Description:

Whelan was once a small community in Whitman County, with its roots tracing back to the late 19th century. The area was part of an attempt to establish a town northeast of Pullman by Christopher Columbus Branham, who unfortunately died in 1888 before his plans could come to fruition. The town never fully developed as intended, leading to its eventual decline.

The cemetery was established in 1888, although there were burials even before that year. It was meant to serve the small community of Whelan but became significant for its historical and botanical value.

Today, Whelan Cemetery is not owned by Pullman or Whitman County but by the Palouse Prairie Foundation, a nonprofit group. This foundation has been actively involved in its maintenance since at least 2013 when they applied for authority over the grounds from the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. The last known burial in the cemetery was in 1946, after which it was largely abandoned until its recognition for conservation purposes.

The cemetery has become an important site for botanists due to its native prairie vegetation. It hosts around 100 species of plants, making it one of the few spots left in the Palouse with such biodiversity.

Beyond its botanical interest, Whelan Cemetery serves as a historical marker of the early settlements and the lives of the people in this part of Washington. The site combines history with natural beauty, drawing visitors interested in both aspects.

This cemetery, therefore, represents not just a place of burial but a confluence of history, conservation, and community effort to preserve a piece of Whitman Counties past.
