The Little White Horse is a fantasy children's novel by Elizabeth Goudge, first published in 1946. At the start of the story, Maria Merryweather is orphaned and has to leave her home in London to live in the countryside in the west of England.
"Her mother had died in her babyhood and her father just two months ago, leaving so many debts that everything he possessed, including the beautiful London house with the fanlight over the door and the tall windows looking out over the garden of the quiet London Square, where Maria had lived throughout the whole of her short life, had had to be sold to pay them.
And soon it would be dark and there would be none of the fashionable new gas lamps that nowadays illumined the London streets; only the deep black awful darkness of the country."
While she lived in London, she was sometimes visited by a mysterious young boy who would appear and play with her in the garden sometimes. In the valley of Moonacre, she discovers that he is a real person and not just her imagination.
"There's another thing I don't understand," said Maria. "How did you manage to come and play with me in the Square garden in London?"
"I went to you when I was asleep," said Robin. "Sometimes I'd be keeping the sheep on Paradise Hill or weeding the manor house garden, and suddenly I'd feel sleepy, and I'd curl round on the grass or among the flowers and doze off, and then I'd find myself in London."
There's several London Squares with a garden, fanlights over the doors and tall windows. This Wherigo begins in Bloomsbury Square Garden (one of the earliest Squares in London, dating from the 1600s), and you'll visit some others along the way.
